Electric and plug-in hybrid cars and vans (also known as Ultra Low Emission Vehicles) usually cost less to refuel and maintain.
New electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are often more expensive than petrol or diesel vehicles, but a used electric vehicle is
often a similar price. This means that buyers of used electric vehicles get all the benefits of lower running costs, without the upfront price premium.

The calculations
This tool is for individuals and businesses considering buying used cars and vans. It estimates direct running costs for used electric, hybrid, petrol and
diesel vehicles, including fuel costs and road tax for vehicles registered between 1 March 2001 and 1 April 2017. Please note it does not include servicing,
maintenance and repair costs, vehicle insurance and purchase costs.
Road tax rates for vehicles registered after 1 April 2017 can be found at gov.uk.
The tool uses generalised vehicle descriptions and asks for the size and type of vehicle you are interested in, for example small car or large van.
You will also be asked for the number of miles that you drive (including commuting) and the longest journeys that you regularly drive. This helps to
identify vehicles with ranges which will best fit your journey patterns.
If you enter any charging zones (e.g. London Congestion Charge zone) regularly, you can enter how often you typically visit and the tool will estimate
saving when driving an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
